Partnership For 21st Century Skills

When I first entered the site Partnership For 21st Century Skills, I thought that the page itself was very visual! After browsing around, I noticed that the overview for the Partnership For 21st Century Skills, believes that all "schools must move beyond a focus on basic competency in core subjects to promoting understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects." (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2004)The site posted the core themes for students to master such as Science, Math, Language, etc. The list also continued with subjects such as Economics and World Language. There mission at the Partnership For 21st Century Skills is to build "collaborative partnerships among education, business, community and government leaders. " (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2004) The skills set that this site includes is...

  • information and communication skills
  • thinking and problem solving
  • interpersonal and self-direction skills
  • global awareness
  • financial, economic and business literacy, and developing entrepreneurial skills
  • civic literacy
(Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2004)

After searching the site, it was surprising to see that only ten states were involved in something that seemed so powerful. The funding for this organization, however, seems to be very supportive. It seems as if these states also with the partnership for 21st century skills try to promote learning through this technique. As teachers, we are not only teaching students how to add and subtract, but we are also teaching them valuable skills in order to find success in their everyday lives. The site also contains information that provides individuals with the knowledge in going about becoming a state member and getting involved in order this partnership helps create the tools and skills that students need to learn, as well as becoming better citizens to our community.

  1. Elizabeth,
I found it interesting that this site emphasized the importance of building financial, business, economic and civic literacy. Although my school is not currently focused on the mission stated above, I am going start building there 21st century literacy by incorporating articles and activities that will expose them to this literacy while still addressing the benchmarks and standards related to the FCAT test.

  2. Hello Elizabeth,
I wonder why only ten states are involved in this Partnership for 21st Century Skills. My first reaction is to be a skeptic and wonder what the flaws are for this program. If funding is there, then why is less then a quarter of the schools in this country getting involved? My reaction is the program has great merit and will be an effective part of preparing students for the ever changing work environment. I found some of the articles very informative, and the reading resources are extensive. My opinion is that this web site is a vehicle for teachers to achieve the goal of preparing students for the future. I am sure this is not the only way to make this happen; there must be other resources available to schools and teachers. I enjoyed reading your posting. Please feel free to take a look at mine. Thanks,
    John M

  4. Elizabeth,

It really surprised me as well that not that many states are working on this certain project. It seems like it would be a great idea, but I guess if the funding is not there, then you can't have everything that you want. I like how the site stresses that they want us as teachers to teach things that are valuable to their everyday lives, but if they can't get the original concept, then I don't know if it will be as successful when they are trying to apply it. Nice job!

  5. I noticed how visual the site was as well. I think most of my 7th and 8th grade students come to me as visual learners on some level becuase of how much they use technology. They are over stimulated in many areas and for them to sit and read out of a text book or write notes does not appeal to the students. I think the people involved with the 21st Century movement realize this as well and therefore work on presenting materials to students in a visual manner.
    Good job!

  6. I think we all noticed that there were not too many states that are not partnered with the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. I wonder why that is? If our world is becoming more technological, then we need to make sure that as teachers, we are providing our students with all the skills they need to know. I know that can be difficult if we do not have these devices or resources, so it always stumps me when there are no funds to provide this for our students.
